Google Photos launches Gemini-powered ‘Ask Photos’ AI search in US

Google Photos has always been a popular tool for storing and organizing photos, but its latest feature, Ask Photos, is taking things to a whole new level. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI, Ask Photos allows users to search their photo library using natural language queries. This revolutionary feature is changing the way users interact with their memories.
Ask Photos is Google’s new AI-powered search tool inside Google Photos. Instead of simply typing keywords or scrolling through endless photos, users can now ask complex questions like “Show me the best photo from each national park I’ve visited” or “What did I eat on my trip to Italy?” The AI understands context, dates, locations, and themes, making it easier to find exactly what you’re looking for.
The Gemini AI model, specifically designed for understanding the content and context of images, powers Ask Photos. When a user asks a question, Gemini analyzes the photos in the library, taking into account factors like location, people, and the quality of each shot. This allows for more accurate and personalized search results.
After pausing the rollout earlier this year to address speed and quality issues, Google has resumed and expanded Ask Photos to more users in the U.S. The new and improved version displays classic search results alongside Gemini AI results on a single page, making the search experience more streamlined. Simple searches deliver instant results, while complex queries are faster and more accurate. Users can opt out of Ask Photos at any time if they prefer the classic search experience.
Ask Photos is now available to more eligible users in the U.S., with requirements including being 18 or older, using English (U.S.) as the account language, and enabling Face Groups. Google assures users that their private photos remain untouched by advertising, and only specific queries may be reviewed to improve the service. Users’ data stays private unless they contact support.
Google Photos AI search is revolutionizing the way users browse their photo library. With natural language search and the power of Gemini AI, Ask Photos is making it easier than ever to find specific memories and relive special moments.
