Rep. Mike Waltz, a Republican from Florida, has been offered the position of national security adviser in the upcoming Trump administration, a reliable source confirmed to Fox News Digital. Waltz has been a prominent surrogate for President-elect Trump during the 2024 campaign, leading military outreach efforts and assisting with the Veterans For Trump coalition. With a background as the first retired Green Beret to serve in Congress and prior experience as a policy adviser to former Defense Secretaries Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates, Waltz brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on Waltz being offered the position, and Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment. Elevating a House lawmaker to the administration could present challenges for Republicans in governing the chamber, as replacing a House member is a process that may take several weeks. Despite this potential hurdle, Waltz holds a safe red seat on the eastern coast of Florida, making it highly unlikely to fall into Democratic hands.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, recently speculated on Fox & Friends that Republicans are on track to secure a slim majority in the House. Waltz is the second House lawmaker to be tapped for an administration role, following House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik’s acceptance of Trump’s nomination to be ambassador to the United Nations earlier in the week. Both Waltz and Stefanik are members of the House Armed Services Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
In a statement accepting the nomination, Stefanik expressed her deep honor at the opportunity to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under President Trump. She emphasized her commitment to advancing Trump’s America First peace through strength leadership on the global stage. Like Stefanik, Waltz is prepared to bring his expertise and dedication to the role of national security adviser.
Former President Donald Trump is already making Cabinet decisions, with the NSA role not requiring Senate confirmation, while the role of UN ambassador does. Sources have indicated that Waltz was also being considered for the position of Secretary of Defense. For further information on Waltz being offered the NSA role, Fox News Digital has reached out to the Trump transition team for comment.
