GOP Rep. Self said he is not obligated to ‘participate’ in trans Dem’s ‘fantasy’

Rep. Keith Self, a Republican from Texas, sparked controversy during a recent congressional hearing when he referred to Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride of Delaware as “Mr. McBride.” Self, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Europe subcommittee, used male pronouns when addressing McBride, who identifies as a transgender woman.

In an interview with conservative commentator Michael Knowles of the Daily Wire, Self defended his use of male pronouns for McBride, stating, “Well, Michael, I’m a retired Green Beret. I’m not even sure what all the fuss is about. I mean, he is allowed to live his life — in fact, I spent 25 years on active duty defending his right to live his life as he chooses. But I don’t have to participate in his fantasy.”

Self’s comments were met with support from Rep. Mary Miller, who previously referred to McBride as “the gentleman from Delaware, Mr. McBride.” Miller took to social media to express her agreement with Self, stating, “Exactly! No one should be forced to go along with the Democrats’ delusions. Thank you, @RepKeithSelf, for your boldness.”

Rep. Tim Burchett, a Republican from Tennessee, also voiced his support for Self’s position, tweeting, “#GoodMan.”

During the congressional hearing, McBride responded to Self’s use of male pronouns by addressing Self as “Madam chair.” Subcommittee ranking member Rep. Bill Keating, a Democrat from Massachusetts, interrupted the proceedings, demanding that Self introduce McBride in the “right way.”

Keating issued an ultimatum to Self, declaring, “You will not continue this hearing with me unless you introduce a duly-elected representative the right way!” In response, Self abruptly adjourned the hearing.

Despite the contentious exchange, McBride took to Twitter to express her commitment to serving her constituents, stating, “No matter how I’m treated by some colleagues, nothing diminishes my awe and gratitude at getting to represent Delaware in Congress. It is truly the honor and privilege of a lifetime. I simply want to serve and to try to make this world a better place.”

The incident highlights the ongoing debate surrounding gender identity and respect for individuals’ chosen pronouns in the political sphere. As the conversation continues, it is essential for lawmakers to engage in respectful dialogue and uphold the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.
