GOP senator to propose ban on gender transition treatment for minors

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., a former medical doctor, is set to introduce a groundbreaking piece of legislation that would put an end to gender-related medical procedures on minors. The bill, known as the Safeguarding the Overall Protection (STOP) of Minors Act, is aimed at banning youth gender transition treatments and “castration procedures” by prohibiting the use of interstate commerce for such practices.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Marshall emphasized the importance of protecting children from what he referred to as “the Left’s dangerous transgender agenda,” labeling it as child abuse. The STOP Act, once passed, will impose a civil penalty of at least $100,000 on individuals providing gender mutilation services and treatments to minors.

Additionally, the bill seeks to provide support for individuals who wish to detransition, or discontinue the gender transition process. Marshall expressed his commitment to working with President Trump on this issue, as Trump has shown interest in scaling back “gender-affirming” care for minors.

During a panel discussion led by Terry Schilling of the American Principles Project, Marshall and other lawmakers highlighted the GOP’s renewed focus on legislation against irreversible gender surgeries on minors. The bill aims to prevent anyone from performing, facilitating, or conspiring to provide these irreversible therapies and procedures to minors.

Opponents of the bill, however, argue in favor of procedures such as hormone replacement therapy and laser hair removal for minors. Recently, they opposed a ban in Tennessee that restricts minors from receiving puberty blockers. A significant number of lawmakers, including senators and representatives, filed an amicus brief defending transgender youth against the ban, which is currently under review by the Supreme Court.

As the legislative landscape continues to evolve, the STOP Act represents a significant step towards protecting minors from potentially harmful medical procedures. Marshall’s dedication to this cause, coupled with the support of like-minded lawmakers, underscores the importance of safeguarding the well-being of children in the face of contentious debates surrounding gender transition treatments.
