GOP senators introduce Golden Dome Act to counter Iranian missile threats

The Iran situation is escalating, prompting senators to introduce a bill that would establish a missile defense system in the United States known as the “Golden Dome.” This system, inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome and championed by President Donald Trump, aims to protect the country from various missile threats.

Sens. Dan Sullivan and Kevin Cramer collaborated on the Ground & Orbital Launched Defeat of Emergent Nuclear Destruction and Other Missile Engagements (Golden Dome) Act, a $21 billion initiative that encompasses more than two dozen defensive strategies. This bill responds to the growing threats posed by countries like Iran, Russia, and China, highlighting the need for a modernized missile defense system.

The Golden Dome Act draws inspiration from President Ronald Reagan’s “Star Wars” plan, which aimed to develop laser-based defense systems against the Soviet Union. Building on this legacy, the Golden Dome plan includes space-based weapons sensors and research into Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture to enhance the country’s defense capabilities.

Alaska, particularly Clear Space Force Base and Fort Greely, plays a crucial role in missile defense, housing ground-based interceptors and radar systems. The state’s strategic location as a gateway to Asia underscores the importance of implementing robust defense systems like the Golden Dome.

The Golden Dome Act focuses on upgrading existing defense systems, replenishing munitions, and developing new technologies like space-based interceptors. It also includes a battle-management system to provide real-time visibility and response options in the event of an attack.

In addition to Alaska, the Golden Dome plan encompasses missile ranges in Hawaii and radar installations in the South, creating a comprehensive defense network across the country. The goal is to stay ahead of evolving threats and protect the homeland from potential missile attacks.

Rep. Mark Messmer will lead companion legislation in the House to support the Golden Dome Act, emphasizing the importance of preventing nuclear weapons from posing a threat to U.S. citizens. The initiative reflects a bipartisan effort to strengthen national security and address the complex challenges posed by modern missile technology.

As the Iran situation continues to escalate, the Golden Dome Act represents a proactive approach to enhancing the country’s missile defense capabilities and safeguarding against potential threats. The collaboration between senators, representatives, and the administration underscores the importance of prioritizing national security in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges.
