Gordon Reid, founder of discount retailer Giant Tiger, dies at age 89

OTTAWA – Gordon Reid, the Canadian businessman who founded the discount store chain Giant Tiger, has died at the age of 89.

The company says in a statement that Reid passed away at his home after a short illness.

Reid opened the first Giant Tiger store in 1961 at ByWard Market in Ottawa.

The chain now has more than 265 locations across Canada and employs more than 10,000 people.

Reid stepped down as CEO in 2020.

The company says no change in ownership or management is expected as a result of Reid’s death.

“Gordon was a giant within the Canadian retail industry, an innovator who reshaped the industry,” Gino DiGioacchino, interim president and CEO, said in the statement. He was also a friend and mentor to us. He will be sorely missed.”
