Grab your friends and the chardonnay — the new Bridget Jones is the best in years

The Bridget Jones franchise has been a staple in the romantic comedy genre for years, with its quirky characters and mishaps capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide. However, as support for mid-range movies, especially romantic comedies, has dwindled in recent years, the latest installment, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, has been relegated to a streaming release on Amazon Prime Video.

Despite its limited release, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has surprised audiences with its demented delight. Renée Zellweger reprises her role as Bridget Jones, who is now in her 50s, a mother of two, and a widow. The film opens with Bridget navigating the chaos of motherhood, all while dealing with the ghostly presence of her late husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).

The star-studded cast includes the return of Hugh Grant as the devilish Daniel Cleaver, as well as Emma Thompson as Bridget’s frank gynecologist. Chiwetel Ejiofor joins the cast as Mr. Wallaker, Billy’s teacher, adding a new dynamic to the story.

As Bridget re-enters the dating scene with the charming park ranger, Roxster, played by Leo Woodall, the film explores themes of love, grief, and family dynamics. Bridget’s relationship with her son Billy, who is still grappling with his father’s death, adds depth to the story and showcases a more mature and introspective side of Bridget.

While the film may exist in a middle-class fantasy world, where single mothers can afford mortgages and all their friends are fabulously wealthy, the sharp writing and playful performances make it a delightful watch. Zellweger shines in her role, delivering comedic moments with ease while also portraying the complexities of grief and love.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is a refreshing take on the beloved character, showing a more natural and self-assured version of Bridget in her 50s. The film is a reminder of Zellweger’s comedic talent and the enduring appeal of the Bridget Jones series.

It’s a shame that the film couldn’t be enjoyed with friends in theaters, but its availability on Amazon Prime Video ensures that fans can still experience the madcap adventures of Bridget Jones from the comfort of their own homes.
