Grassley says left-wing groups might require FARA registration over China ties

Code Pink, a well-known liberal antiwar group recognized for their disruptive tactics during hearings while clad in their signature fuchsia attire, is facing scrutiny from a top Senate Republican. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, has raised concerns about whether Code Pink, along with the New York-based socialist organization The People’s Forum, should register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) of 1938.

Grassley penned a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in political activities that benefit foreign entities or governments. He emphasized the importance of FARA in combating foreign influence on U.S. public policy and opinion, citing the CCP’s significant financial investments to sway American politics.

The focus of Grassley’s inquiry centers on Neville Roy Singham, a wealthy Shanghai-based U.S. citizen-activist with alleged ties to both Code Pink and The People’s Forum. Singham, who reportedly attended a Communist Party workshop on promoting the party internationally, has been linked to efforts to shape public perception about China through various media ventures.

Code Pink, co-founded by Jodie Evans, Singham’s wife, has received substantial donations from groups associated with Singham. Grassley highlighted Evans’ reported support for China, including criticism of the Uyghurs as terrorists, contrary to U.S. government views on human rights abuses in China.

Moreover, Grassley pointed to Code Pink’s denial of forced labor in Xinjiang and opposition to funding anti-Chinese propaganda campaigns as evidence of their alignment with China’s interests. As for The People’s Forum, Grassley cited their involvement in anti-Israel protests following Hamas terror attacks and Singham’s role as a key funder of the organization.

Rep. Bruce Westerman previously demanded answers from The People’s Forum regarding their alleged connections to pro-Palestinian vandalism protests. Grassley asserted that both Code Pink and The People’s Forum have engaged in political activities that advance China’s agenda, calling for a review of their FARA eligibility.

The investigation underscores the need to address secretive foreign lobbying efforts that undermine American interests. Grassley urged the DOJ to assess interactions between the groups and federal authorities, emphasizing the importance of upholding FARA regulations.

Despite attempts to reach out to Code Pink, The People’s Forum, and Singham for comment, no responses were received. The ongoing scrutiny highlights the complexities of foreign influence in domestic politics and the importance of transparency in political activities.
