Green Bay Packers Free from former Laurier Quarterback Taylor Elgsma

The Green Bay Packers have made the decision not to include Canadian Quarterback Taylor Elgersma in their active roster for the upcoming season. Elgersma, a former star at Wilfrid Laurier University, was placed on the reserve list as the team finalized their 53-man roster. The Packers will start the season with just two quarterbacks, Jordan Love and Malik Willis, with Sean Clifford also being released.
If Elgersma clears waivers, he could potentially be placed on the team’s practice squad. Other Canadians who were released by NFL teams include tight end Nikola Kalinic (Atlanta Falcons), receiver Ajou Ajou (Indianapolis Colts), offensive linemen Sidy Sow (New England Patriots) and Kyle Hengel (New Orleans Saints).
Meanwhile, Canadian Kurtis Rourke, who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round, is currently on the non-football injury list as he continues to recover from a knee operation. Rourke suffered a torn ACL while playing for Indiana in the 2024 season.
Elgersma, who signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent, has shown promise in preseason games, completing 16-of-23 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. He will have the opportunity to continue developing his skills with the team.
In addition to Elgersma, other Canadian players are also pursuing NFL opportunities. Ajou, a former player for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, signed with the Colts and showed potential in preseason games. Hengel, who is entering his second season with the Saints, is aiming to make an impact on the field.
Sow, a former draft pick of the Patriots, is looking to bounce back after a challenging season. The defensive tackle played collegiately at Eastern Michigan University and was drafted by the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Overall, Canadian players continue to make their mark in the NFL, showcasing their talent and determination to succeed at the highest level of football. With the new season set to begin, fans can look forward to seeing these athletes compete on the big stage.
