Greene fields bill to punish performance of gender transition measures on minors

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has introduced a new bill aimed at punishing those who perform gender transition procedures on minors. The bill, titled the “Protect Children’s Innocence Act of 2025,” seeks to put an end to what Greene describes as the “mutilation of kids” by holding accountable those responsible for these procedures.

According to a press release from Greene’s office, the bill targets “left-wing activists and medical institutions” who are allegedly targeting children with “dangerous drugs, disfiguring surgeries, and permanent sterilization.” Greene’s bill specifically addresses the issue of chemical castration and genital or bodily mutilation of minors, particularly in cases involving interstate or foreign commerce.

The proposed legislation defines chemical castration as the use of puberty blockers and abnormally high doses of testosterone and estrogen. Offenders would face fines, imprisonment of up to ten years, or both under the bill. However, there are exceptions allowed, such as when the procedures are deemed necessary for the minor’s health, excluding mental health disorders.

The bill has garnered support from numerous House Republican cosponsors, and a markup for the measure in the House Judiciary Committee is scheduled for the near future. This initiative aligns with President Donald Trump’s previous executive order, which aimed to protect children from what he referred to as “radical gender-ideology-related measures.”

In his order, Trump declared that the United States would not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support gender transition procedures for children. The order emphasized the enforcement of laws prohibiting or limiting these procedures, highlighting the administration’s commitment to safeguarding children from what it perceives as destructive and life-altering interventions.

Overall, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s bill reflects a growing concern among some lawmakers about the well-being of minors undergoing gender transition procedures. The proposed legislation seeks to address these concerns by imposing penalties on those responsible for performing or facilitating such procedures on children. As the bill moves through the legislative process, its impact on the broader debate around gender identity and children’s rights remains to be seen.
