Greenland government calls Trump’s acquisition talks ‘unacceptable’

The government of Greenland has strongly condemned President Donald Trump’s comments about taking control of the country, calling them “unacceptable” in a statement released on Friday. The statement was prompted by Trump’s meeting with the NATO secretary general during which he reportedly reiterated his desire for annexation and control of Greenland.

In response to Trump’s remarks, the leaders of all political parties elected to Inatsisartut, the Parliament of Greenland, including the Demokraatit, Naleraq, Inuit Ataqatigiit, Siumut, and Atassut parties, issued a joint statement expressing their disapproval. They stated that they “cannot accept the repeated statements regarding annexation and control of Greenland” and deemed such behavior towards friends and allies in a defense alliance as unacceptable.

The leaders emphasized that Greenland will continue to serve its people through diplomatic relations in accordance with international law. They stressed that Greenland belongs to the Greenlandic people and stood together in unity against any attempts to create discord.

In the recent parliamentary elections in Greenland, the Demokraatit party defeated Prime Minister Múte Egede’s party, Inuit Ataqatigiit, with independence from Denmark becoming a core election issue following Trump’s continued interest in acquiring Greenland.

President Trump had previously expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, referring to it as a “large real estate deal.” However, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede firmly stated that the country was not for sale and would never be for sale.

American interest in Greenland dates back to the 1800s, with the State Department considering purchasing Greenland and Iceland in 1867. Denmark rejected a proposed $100 million deal from President Harry Truman following World War II.

Acquiring Greenland would mark the largest expansion of American territory in history, surpassing the Louisiana Purchase. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.

The government of Greenland’s strong stance against President Trump’s comments highlights the country’s commitment to its sovereignty and diplomatic relations. It underscores the importance of respecting international law and the rights of the Greenlandic people.
