Grigor Dimitrov retires with pectoral injury while leading Sinner at Wimbledon

Grigor Dimitrov’s hopes of upsetting Wimbledon’s No. 1-seeded men’s singles player, Jannik Sinner, were dashed on Monday due to an unfortunate injury. Dimitrov, who was leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2, had to retire from the match in the Round of 16 due to an apparent pectoral injury.
The injury occurred during a serve, as Dimitrov fell to the ground in pain, clutching his right pec. Despite receiving medical attention and returning to the court for a brief moment, Dimitrov ultimately had to concede the match to Sinner.
Sinner, who advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals as a result of Dimitrov’s retirement, expressed his respect for Dimitrov after the match, acknowledging the Bulgarian player’s talent and unfortunate string of injuries in recent tournaments.
This injury marks the fifth consecutive tournament in which Dimitrov has been forced to retire due to injury, highlighting the recurring issue he has faced in Grand Slam events. In 2024, Dimitrov had to withdraw from the fourth round of Wimbledon due to an abductor tear.
Despite the disappointing end to his Wimbledon campaign, Dimitrov was playing well and aiming to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2014. However, his injury woes have once again cut his tournament short.
Sinner, on the other hand, will now prepare to face American player Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. Shelton secured his spot in the next round by defeating Lorenzo Sonego in a thrilling match on Monday.
As the Wimbledon tournament progresses, fans will be eagerly watching to see how Sinner and Shelton fare in their upcoming match. Stay tuned for more updates on the Wimbledon action and follow Fox News Digital for the latest sports coverage.
