Chimney repair scam has N.S. RCMP looking for public’s help

Halifax Residents Warned of Chimney Repair Scam by Nova Scotia RCMP

Nova Scotia RCMP are seeking assistance from the public following a series of reports regarding a chimney repair scam in the Halifax area. According to a news release issued on Friday, police have responded to four instances of fraud between Jan. 5 and Jan. 10, where a group of young men have been approaching homeowners door-to-door and offering chimney repair services.

Reports indicate that homeowners agreed to a set price for the chimney repairs, only to be asked for additional funds once the demolition work began. Shockingly, the work was never completed despite the additional payments. The scammers are said to have operated under the guise of a legitimate business, using a convincing website to deceive their victims.

Each fraudulent incident involved the participation of four individuals, but the RCMP refrained from disclosing the name of the scam company due to its resemblance to that of a genuine enterprise. Authorities suspect that the scammers may alter their company name in future schemes.

Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay issued a warning to the public, advising caution when approached by contractors offering chimney repairs or similar services. He highlighted a similar scam from the previous year involving a fake roofing company targeting homeowners.

Residents are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police by calling 902-490-5020. The RCMP are actively investigating these scams and are seeking any information that may aid in their efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
