Rubio announces State Department reorganization
The Trump administration has made a bold move to overhaul the State Department by shuttering more than 130 offices around the world. According to Rubio, the consolidation of region-specific functions will increase functionality, and redundant offices will be shut down to eliminate wasteful spending. Programs that do not align with America’s core national interests will also be discontinued under this new plan.

Despite Congress voting to shut down the GEC, it simply renamed itself and continued operating, highlighting the need for drastic reform.
The proposed changes include the closure of several embassies and consulates in sub-Saharan Africa and a reduction in diplomatic operations in Canada. Additionally, the number of agency offices will be reduced from 734 to 602, representing a 17% reduction.
Rubio’s plans also target offices related to human rights and democracy promotion, which he believes have been co-opted by activists pursuing their own agendas at the taxpayers’ expense. By consolidating non-security foreign assistance in regional bureaus and discontinuing programs not aligned with core national interests, Rubio aims to bring the State Department in line with Trump’s America First foreign policy.
The announcement did not specify whether any consulates would be shut down, but under secretaries at the State Department have been instructed to present plans to reduce U.S. personnel in individual departments by 15% within 30 days.
