Guatemalan man illegally in US accused of sexually abusing Alabama child

A Guatemalan man, identified as Luis Lopez-Martinez, was apprehended by law enforcement in north Alabama for allegedly sexually abusing a child under the age of 12. The incident came to light when a 911 call reported the heinous act, which was witnessed by the victim’s family. The family managed to detain Lopez-Martinez until the authorities arrived on the scene.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Lopez-Martinez had initially provided a false identity, but his true identity was later confirmed. The victim, who remains unnamed for privacy reasons, was promptly taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation and care.

During an interview with an investigator, Lopez-Martinez reportedly confessed to the crime, callously stating, “it is what it is.” Subsequently, he was arrested by Limestone County Deputy Bradley Fontenot and is currently being held in custody with a bond set at $250,000.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued an immigration detainer on Lopez-Martinez, ensuring that he will not be released back into the community even if he manages to post bail. By honoring the detainer, law enforcement agencies notify ICE before releasing a potentially dangerous noncitizen, allowing ICE officers to take the individual into custody in a secure environment.

The investigation into the case is ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges being filed. Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin of the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office commended Deputy Fontenot and Investigator Kandace Wilson for their unwavering commitment to seeking justice for the young victim.
