Halifax acupuncturist sentenced for sexual assault

A Halifax acupuncturist, Xiao Han Li, has been sentenced to six months in jail for sexual assault. The sentence was handed down on Tuesday morning in provincial court in Halifax. Along with the jail time, Li must also serve 12 months on probation and pay $1,754 in restitution.
Li was charged in 2019 after a woman contacted police to report that she had been sexually assaulted at the Qing Li Chinese Therapy Clinic on Dresden Row in Halifax, where Li was employed. Following this initial accusation, three other women came forward with similar allegations of sexual assault against Li.
In 2023, Li was convicted of another charge of sexual assault, for which he received a conditional discharge and three years of probation. However, he was acquitted of a separate sexual assault charge in March 2024. Additionally, several charges involving a different complainant were ultimately withdrawn.
The case has garnered significant attention and raises important discussions around the safety and accountability of healthcare practitioners. It serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting incidents of sexual assault and seeking justice for survivors.
As the community continues to grapple with the impact of this case, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals seeking healthcare services. Holding perpetrators accountable and providing support for survivors are essential steps in fostering a safe and respectful environment for all.
