Rougeau scores winner as Toronto beats Montreal in 1st-ever PWHL shootout

Lauriane Rougeau scored the decisive goal as Toronto defeated host Montreal 4-3 in the first shootout in Professional Women’s Hockey League history on Saturday, the first matchup between the teams.

Jocelyne Larocque, Maggie Connors and Natalie Spooner scored in regulation to help Toronto snap a three-game skid. Sarah Bujold and Marie-Philip Poulin, twice, replied for Montreal in regulation.

Poulin sent the game to overtime with a late equalizer.

The PWHL’s unique rules include changes to the usual shootout format, as a player is eligible at any time to take any number of shots and as often as the team chooses.

Also, the shootouts consist of five shots per team — instead of the NHL’s three — unless the outcome is determined earlier.

Toronto’s (2-4) victory continues a debut-season trend for the league, as home teams have just three wins in 15 games.

Montreal (4-2) is still winless at Verdun Auditorium, but has already secured a home win when they took on New York at Place Bell.
