Halifax-area recreation farm asks neighbours to hold off on fireworks

As Canada Day approaches, a well-known recreation farm in Halifax is urging residents to refrain from setting off loud fireworks due to the distress it causes their animals. Hatfield Farm recently took to social media to address the issue, citing instances where fireworks caused their horses to panic and stampede.

Owner Brian Hatfield expressed concern over the safety of both the animals and the public, stating that the horses could potentially harm someone if they were to escape onto the nearby road. He recounted the harrowing experience of having to chase down the panicked horses in an effort to calm them down, emphasizing the potential dangers involved.

While Hatfield acknowledges that he cannot completely prevent individuals from using fireworks, he is urging those in the vicinity to notify the farm in advance so that necessary precautions can be taken. By keeping the horses securely tied up indoors during fireworks displays, the risk of accidents can be significantly reduced.

The issue of fireworks safety has garnered attention from advocacy groups, including #FireworksHurt, which was formed following a tragic incident in Canning, N.S., where a horse had to be euthanized after breaking its leg in a panic caused by fireworks. Hugh Chisholm, a member of the group, highlighted the need for stricter regulations on fireworks usage, drawing attention to the Nova Scotia Equestrian Federation’s call for a ban on public fireworks displays.

Chisholm emphasized the importance of balancing celebration with safety, noting that while fireworks can be enjoyed at sanctioned events, their unregulated use poses significant risks to both animals and the environment. He pointed to Prince Edward Island’s longstanding ban on fireworks as a potential model for Nova Scotia to follow, advocating for greater accountability and consideration for the well-being of all beings.

Ultimately, the message is clear: the fleeting enjoyment of fireworks should not come at the expense of the safety and well-being of animals, people, and the environment. By exercising caution and mindfulness in their celebrations, individuals can ensure a harmonious and safe Canada Day for all.
