Halifax Beach closes again due to blue -green algae

Oakfield Beach near Enfield remains closed for the year due to blue-green algae bloom
The regional municipality of Halifax has announced the closure of Oakfield Beach near Enfield once again this year due to the potential presence of a blue-green algae bloom. Blue-green algae is known to occur naturally in freshwater environments and can flourish in calm and warm weather conditions. Some species of blue-green algae produce toxins that can be harmful to both people and pets.
It is important for everyone who visits the site to be cautious and follow these guidelines:
- Avoid any contact with the water. If contact does occur, be sure to thoroughly towel off and wash with tap water as soon as possible.
- Avoid swimming or wading in areas where blue-green algae is visible or where swimming is prohibited due to the presence of algae. This also applies to children and pets.
- Keep pets on a leash and prevent them from consuming any algae material.
- Avoid drinking water from the lake.
- Avoid consuming fish caught in the lake.
The municipality emphasizes that exposure to blue-green algae or contaminated water can result in skin irritation, rash, sore throat, red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Children and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for adverse effects.
