Halifax homicide victims remembered as a loving mom and a grandfather who coached hockey

A tragic incident occurred on New Year’s Eve in Halifax, where a father and daughter lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. Corelee “Alisha” Smith and Bradford “Coy” Downey were fatally shot in a vehicle on Gottingen Street by Smith’s boyfriend, who later took his own life. The heartbreaking incident was classified as a case of intimate partner violence, adding to the alarming number of such occurrences in the province in recent months.

Alisha Smith, aged 40, is fondly remembered as a vibrant and charismatic individual with a larger-than-life personality. Her obituary highlights her role as a residential counselor at Our Neighbourhood Living Society and her previous work as a continuing care assistant. Alisha had a passion for travel and was known for her meticulous planning of family trips and girls’ nights. She cherished her two daughters, Naiziyah and A’Laysha, considering them her best friends. Alisha is survived by her siblings, godchildren, and a wide circle of family and friends who adored her energy and zest for life.

Bradford “Coy” Downey, aged 73, was a sports enthusiast who found joy in watching football, baseball, and hockey. He also dedicated his time to coaching a hockey team in North Preston, where he resided. Described as highly intelligent and a fan of trivia, Coy was a member of Saint Thomas Baptist Church and a retired construction laborer. He leaves behind a legacy of nine children, numerous siblings, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will forever cherish his memory.

Both Alisha and Coy hailed from North Preston, a historic Black community near Halifax, where they will be remembered and honored in a joint visitation, funeral service, and burial at Saint Thomas Baptist Church this Saturday. Their untimely deaths have left a void in the community, as loved ones gather to pay their respects and celebrate the lives of two remarkable individuals who brought light and joy to those around them.
