Halifax Water adds mandatory restrictions due to low levels in Lake Major

Halifax Water has implemented mandatory restrictions on certain activities for customers in Dartmouth, Burnside, Cole Harbour, Westphal, North Preston, and Eastern Passage who are supplied by the Lake Major reservoir. Despite recent weekend rainfall, water levels remain critically low, and a substantial amount of rain is still needed for the lake to return to normal levels, as stated in a news release issued by the water utility on Tuesday.

The restricted activities include the use of bulk water fill-up stations on the Lake Major system, which are now closed. Haulers are advised to utilize other approved locations by Halifax Water for their water needs. Additionally, voluntary conservation measures that were put in place on November 15 for residents supplied by the municipal reservoir are still in effect. These measures include reducing the length and frequency of showers, turning off taps when not in use, limiting toilet flushes, and practicing water-saving techniques such as washing only full loads of laundry and dishes.

The dry conditions in the region have been attributed to a prolonged period of dry weather during the summer and fall, according to the Canadian Drought Monitor. Most parts of Nova Scotia are currently experiencing abnormally or moderately dry conditions. CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon noted that November rainfall in the Halifax area and mainland Nova Scotia is below average. October also saw extremely dry conditions, with rainfall amounts ranging from only 35 to 60 percent of the normal average.

Snoddon emphasized that above-average precipitation has been scarce in the province, with the last significant rainfall occurring in March. Therefore, it will take more than just a rainy weekend to alleviate water concerns for many residents, especially those reliant on the Lake Major reservoir for their water supply.

In light of these challenges, it is crucial for residents to adhere to the imposed restrictions and conservation measures to ensure the sustainable use of water resources. By working together to conserve water, residents can help mitigate the impact of the ongoing dry conditions and safeguard the availability of water for essential needs.
