Halifax woman, two men charged with firearms offences after impaired driving tip

HALIFAX, N.S. — Two men and a woman racked up several firearms charges during a traffic stop in Halifax on Saturday morning.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., Halifax Regional Police officers responded to a tip about an impaired driver in Barrington Street’s 1000 block area and found the suspect vehicle with two flat tires.

Officers turned their lights and siren on to get the vehicle to stop but it continued for a short distance before pulling into a parking lot.

Once stopped, police said the driver — a 21-year-old woman — was showing signs of impairment.

Police also received reports that the two male passengers had entered a nearby store with a firearm — leading to their arrest and the seizure of a loaded firearm and ammunition.

The woman and the men, ages 20 and 23, are scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date to face charges of possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, possession of a firearm without a licence, unauthorized possession of firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, unsafe storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a vehicle.

The 20-year-old man is also facing charges of possession of a firearm contrary to a court order and the woman must answer to drug-impaired driving charges.
