Hamilton’s Matt Campbell defeats Jim Long in all-Canadian darts final

Matt Campbell successfully defends bet365 North American Darts Championship title

Canadian darts player Matt Campbell, also known as Ginjaninja, made history by becoming the first player to retain the bet365 North American Darts Championship title. The 35-year-old from Hamilton defeated his compatriot Jim Long in an exciting final that took place in New York. Campbell, who is currently ranked 53rd in the world, took home $10,000 US in prize money for his victory.

This was not the first time Campbell had triumphed at this event, as he had also emerged victorious at The Theater at Madison Square Garden the previous year. In the final showdown against Long, Campbell found himself trailing in the early stages but managed to turn the game around and establish a 3-1 lead. Despite Long’s efforts to narrow the gap, Campbell showcased his skill by hitting double-top checkouts to secure a 6-3 win.

Reflecting on his achievement, Campbell expressed his joy at successfully defending his title. He acknowledged that the final match against Long, who he considers a good friend, was challenging but ultimately rewarding. The two players had previously teamed up to represent Canada at the World Cup of Darts in Germany.

On his path to the final, Campbell defeated Jason Brandon 6-1 in the quarterfinal and Stowe Buntz 6-2 in the semifinal. Long, on the other hand, overcame Adam Sevada 6-4 in the opening tie and then secured a 6-1 victory against American No. 1 Danny Lauby in the semifinal.

Despite his disappointment at falling short in the final, Long praised Campbell’s performance and highlighted their close friendship. The 57-year-old retired autoworker from London, Ont., admitted that he struggled to find his rhythm in the match but commended Campbell for his outstanding play.

Additionally, the 2025 CDC Continental Cup winner will earn the opportunity to compete in the Grand Slam of Darts.
