Harmon and Larocque among 4 Olympians involved in major PWHL trade between Toronto and Ottawa
Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa Charge Complete Major Trade in PWHL
A significant trade in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) took place between the Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa Charge, showcasing competing philosophies on offense and toughness. The trade, completed on Monday night, involved four players with a combined six Winter Games appearances and included a swap of 2023 first-round draft picks.
The trade saw physical defenseman Jocelyn Larocque moving to Ottawa in exchange for play-making blue-liner Savannah Harmon. Additionally, forwards Victoria Bach and Hayley Scamurra were traded between the two teams. Harmon and Scamurra, both current U.S. national team members, bring their experience and skill to their new teams, while Larocque, a veteran blueliner for Canada, adds leadership and physical presence to the Charge.
Toronto Sceptres’ general manager Gina Kingsbury expressed mixed emotions about parting ways with familiar players but remains optimistic about the team’s future. In Ottawa, Charge GM Mike Hirshfeld was pleased to acquire Larocque’s leadership and Bach’s offensive potential, believing she was underutilized in Toronto.
The trade comes as both teams have identical records in the season, with all four players expected to make their debuts for their new teams in an upcoming match between Toronto and Ottawa. The trade marks a significant move in the PWHL, following the league’s first notable trade earlier in the season.
Harmon’s addition to the Sceptres provides them with another play-making defenseman to complement the team’s offensive strategy. With Toronto still awaiting the return of MVP Natalie Spooner, Harmon’s skills are expected to enhance the team’s performance. On the other hand, Larocque’s presence in Ottawa aims to strengthen the team’s defense and provide mentorship to younger players.
Both teams have specific goals in mind with this trade, seeking to improve their performance and competitiveness in the league. With talented players now on board, Toronto and Ottawa are gearing up for an exciting season ahead.
