He wanted to photograph the northern lights. Now his Facebook page has taken off

When Chris Verge established a Facebook group dedicated to chasing the aurora borealis in Nova Scotia back in 2018, little did he know the immense following he would garner in the pursuit. This weekend commemorates one year since vibrant hues of green, pink, and purple gracefully danced across the skies of Atlantic Canada. The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, is a rare spectacle in this region but has made several appearances over the past year due to heightened solar activity.

The mesmerizing light show, typically reserved for more northern latitudes, has piqued the interest of many Nova Scotians eager to witness its beauty once again. Enthusiasts have been flocking to Verge’s Facebook group to share their predictions for potential sightings in the night sky.

Like many others, Verge, a resident of Debert, N.S., once believed he would have to travel north to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis. However, he had his first encounter with this celestial phenomenon 11 years ago in Malagash Point, N.S. The experience left him exhilarated as he marveled at the visible movement of the lights. Despite the awe-inspiring sight, Verge regretted not having his camera on hand to capture the moment.

Inspired by his initial sighting, Verge decided to create the Nova Scotia Aurora Chasers Facebook group. Members of the group collaborate to share information, providing insights into when the lights may be visible and offering photography tips for capturing the spectacle. The group has now amassed over 47,000 members, with a significant influx since last May.

Jason Dain, a recent addition to the group, joined last summer after taking up photography. He had the opportunity to witness and photograph the aurora borealis in 2022 at Martinique Beach. Describing the experience as magical, Dain recounted how the entire sky was illuminated, reflecting off the water behind the beach.

Since joining the group, Dain has expanded his knowledge of the northern lights and is eager to help others experience the same sense of wonder that captivated him. As he continues to learn and grow in his photography journey, Dain finds fulfillment in assisting others in capturing the beauty of the aurora borealis.

The Nova Scotia Aurora Chasers Facebook group serves as a platform for both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers to come together, share their passion for the northern lights, and support one another in their quest to witness this natural wonder. With each new member and each shared experience, the group continues to foster a sense of community and shared excitement for the celestial displays that grace the skies of Nova Scotia.
