Henry top name for new babies in Nova Scotia so far in 2023

Henry has usurped Oliver as the most common name for new babies in Nova Scotia.

Oliver – the top choice of name in 2022 – actually dropped to third overall as of Thursday in a list of Nova Scotians’ favourite baby names in 2023.

The numbers come from the province’s registry of vital statistics.

But it will only take two more Theodores over the last three days of the year to assume the top spot. Henry had 35 registrations, followed by Theodore’s 34 and Oliver’s 31.

Olivia is the current top girl’s name, with 25, followed by Violet with 23 and Charlotte with 22.

Olivia was the top name overall in 2021 but currently sits at number 10.

Service Nova Scotia says the top names have remained fairly consistent over the past few years, although a few names, such as Bennett, are gaining in popularity and old faves like Violet and Charlotte have been making comebacks.

As of Thursday, there had been 5,922 registered births in the province.

When the province started formally registering births in August 1864, the most popular names were Mary and John.
