Her neighbour is feeding rats, and she doesn’t know what to do

Residents of a community near Wolfville, N.S., are facing a serious rat infestation that has left them frustrated with the lack of action taken to control the problem. Natasha Banks, a resident of White Rock, first noticed rats on her property last fall, and the issue has only worsened since then. The rats have been causing damage by chewing on her car, living under her deck, and infesting her garage. Banks has been trying to combat the infestation by trapping and poisoning the rats, but the problem persists.

After speaking with other residents in the area, Banks discovered that the infestation originated from her next-door neighbor’s property. The neighbor, who declined to be interviewed, admitted to having a rat problem and estimated that there were around 50 rats on his property. However, a pest control expert inspecting Banks’s property believes the number is much higher, likely exceeding 100 rats.

Concerned about the public safety implications of the infestation, Banks contacted the Municipality of Kings County for assistance. After a week without a response, she took to Facebook to share a video of the situation in hopes of drawing attention to the issue. She emphasized her worries about her neighbor’s health and well-being, as well as the safety of her own family, including her newborn baby and four-year-old child.

Following the public outcry, the municipality sent an enforcement officer to the neighbor’s property to address the infestation. A six-week plan is now being implemented to bring the situation under control. Banks, however, is still concerned about the ongoing impact on her property and the potential for the infestation to spread if not properly contained.

Despite the financial burden of spending over $1,000 on pest control measures for her own property, Banks remains optimistic but realistic about the long-term prospects of resolving the issue. She believes that this is just the beginning of a challenging battle against the rats and hopes for a swift and effective solution to protect her community from further harm.
