Here are your Best of Halifax 2024 winners for Shopping + Services
Book lovers in Halifax have a reason to celebrate as Bookmark, located on Spring Garden Road, has once again clinched the prestigious Best of Halifax gold award. This marks the seventh win for the independent bookstore, which has been a staple in the downtown area for 35 years. Despite facing challenges such as changes in ownership, COVID-19 lockdowns, and competition from online retail giants like Amazon, Bookmark has continued to thrive and provide Haligonians with the latest titles from a diverse range of authors.
Manager Michael Hamm attributes Bookmark’s success not just to the books it sells, but to the relationships it has built with customers over the years. “People can buy certain books elsewhere, but it’s the relationship that we have with people and the friends we make that really counts,” Hamm shared with The Coast.
The 2024 Best of Halifax awards also saw other deserving winners in the Shopping + Services category. Cedric “Ceddy The Barber” DeChamp, Malyssa Burns, and Demetrius Ferguson were among those who picked up their third consecutive gold awards in their respective categories. Sweet Pea Boutique continued its dominance with a sixth straight win in the Best Clothing Store category, while Lucky Cat Barbershop claimed its first gold award.
Familiar names like Atlantic News and Strange Adventures Halifax also took home gold awards this year. Atlantic News was recognized as the Best Corner Store for the first time since 2019, under its new ownership. Strange Adventures Halifax, after being inducted into the Hall of Fame, re-entered the Best Comic Shop category to showcase its excellence once again.
