Here’s a look at England’s first luxury sleeper train set to debut July 2025

LONDON –

The United Kingdom, known as the birthplace of rail transport, is set to introduce its first luxury sleeper train next summer. The Britannic Explorer, a Belmond Train, U.K., will embark on its maiden journey from London in July 2025, offering three distinct routes through the picturesque landscapes of Cornwall, the Lake District, and Wales.

Featuring 18 cabins, including three grand suites and 15 suites, the train promises a level of opulence never before seen on British railways.

Unveiled at a railway depot in south London, a preview cabin showcases a sensory delight with finely crafted oak paneling, marbled table tops, plush velvet sofas, and deep carpets adorned with intricate patterns. The luxurious ambiance invites guests to indulge in a truly lavish experience.

However, such luxury comes at a price, with a three-night itinerary in a double cabin starting at £11,000 (approximately $14,103), inclusive of excursions, meals, and alcoholic beverages. Despite the cost, the experience is expected to be unforgettable.

The design of the train, conceptualized by London-based studio Albion Nord, draws inspiration from English houses and gardens, featuring a calming color palette of delicate greens and creams reminiscent of the surrounding scenery.

Ottavia Palomba, global head of brand communications at Belmond, describes the train as a “moving painting,” offering guests a serene environment to relax and enjoy the passing views from the comfort of their elegantly furnished suites.

One of the unique aspects of train travel is the social aspect it provides. The Dining Cars, overseen by acclaimed British chef Simon Rogan, will serve as a hub for guests to socialize and dine in a setting inspired by English country estates.

Named Malva and Samphire, the Dining Cars feature botanical tapestries and woven paneling inspired by English gardens, creating a charming ambiance for guests to savor their culinary experience.

‘Collective Effervescence’

The allure of a sleeper train lies in its theatricality, according to Palomba. Each carriage serves as a stage for guests to immerse themselves in a glamorous lifestyle, away from the routine of daily life.

The Observation Car boasts a bar inspired by Victorian apothecaries, offering a selection of botanically inspired cocktails and artisanal beverages. Meanwhile, the Dining Car showcases bespoke menus reflecting Britain’s diverse landscapes, curated by Simon Rogan to create a truly memorable dining experience.

For moments of relaxation, the Wellness Suite provides a tranquil space with marble countertops and glass walls inspired by the fluidity of the sea. Guests can choose from a range of wellness treatments and off-board excursions to enhance their overall well-being.

The Britannic Explorer pays homage to Britain’s rich history as pioneers in train travel, utilizing renovated carriages from the 1970s to offer a blend of modern luxury and traditional charm. With its heritage rooted in the development of the first steam locomotive by Richard Trevithick in South Wales, the train embodies the nation’s legacy of innovation in rail transport.

Beyond the train carriages, the routes offer international visitors a chance to explore the diverse cities, towns, and landscapes of England and Wales. The Cornwall itinerary showcases the rugged coastline of Penzance and the quaint villages of Lostwithiel, while the Lake District boasts dramatic peaks and tranquil lakes. Lastly, the Welsh route takes passengers from the mountains of Snowdonia National Park to the sweeping beaches of Pembrokeshire.
