Here’s how many US service members are spending the holidays away from home deployed overseas
As Christmas approaches and the new year looms on the horizon, it’s important to remember the sacrifices being made by hundreds of thousands of American service members who are stationed in various corners of the world, far away from their loved ones. While many of us gather with family and friends to celebrate, these brave men and women are serving their country in less festive environments.
As of the latest data, over 165,000 U.S. service members are deployed across the Middle East, Indo-Pacific region, and Europe. This number has likely increased due to recent unrest in the Middle East, and it doesn’t account for those working on U.S. bases or civilian personnel under overseas contracts.
In the Middle East, approximately 43,000 troops are stationed in various countries, with recent escalations in Lebanon and ongoing missions in Syria and Iraq to combat ISIS. In Europe, U.S. forces are deployed to support NATO allies and deter Russian aggression, with major concentrations in Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
In Asia, U.S. forces work closely with allies to conduct joint exercises and address the threat posed by China. Key areas of deployment include South Korea, Japan, and Guam. Despite being far from home during the holiday season, these service members continue to fulfill their duties with dedication and professionalism.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin recently expressed gratitude to the troops serving overseas during the holidays, acknowledging the challenges of being away from family. He highlighted the resilience of military families and their crucial role in supporting the nation’s defense.
As we enjoy the warmth and joy of the holiday season, let’s take a moment to remember and honor the sacrifices of those who are serving their country far from home. Their dedication and sacrifice ensure our safety and security, and they deserve our utmost respect and appreciation.
