US Election 2024

Here’s what happened during Trump’s 13th week in office

President Donald Trump had a productive week at the White House, meeting with foreign leaders from El Salvador and Italy to discuss trade and immigration issues. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Washington amidst looming tariffs against the European Union and other countries, with hopes of securing a trade deal before potential tariffs go into effect in June. Both Trump and Meloni expressed confidence in reaching a fair trade agreement.

During her visit, Meloni emphasized the importance of open dialogue between the U.S. and Europe to address mutual needs and foster economic cooperation. Vice President JD Vance also met with Meloni in Rome to further discuss economic policies between the two countries.

In a separate meeting, President Trump met with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele to address the case of Maryland resident Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, who was deported to El Salvador in an administrative error. Despite accusations of being a member of the MS-13 gang, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of facilitating Abrego-Garcia’s release from custody in El Salvador.

On the domestic front, the Trump administration clashed with Harvard University over federal funding, freezing over $2 billion in funding after the institution refused to comply with certain requests. Harvard President Alan M. Garber cited concerns over unconstitutional requests and vowed not to accept the proposed agreement.

In a move to combat rising prescription drug prices, President Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Health and Human Services to standardize Medicare payments for prescription drugs. This measure aims to lower drug prices for patients by up to 60% and match Medicare payments to hospital prices for certain medications, resulting in significant cost savings for consumers.
