Hideki Matsuyama finishes at 35-under for record-setting start to PGA Tour with victory at Kapalua

Hideki Matsuyama made history at The Sentry tournament by breaking the PGA Tour record for the lowest score to par for 72 holes. Matsuyama’s stunning performance included a final round of 8-under 65, securing a three-shot victory over Collin Morikawa. With a total score of 35-under 257, Matsuyama surpassed Cameron Smith’s previous record of 34-under par set in 2022.

The Japanese golfer also set a new PGA Tour record with his 35th birdie or better during the tournament, surpassing the previous record held by Smith and Sungjae Im. This victory marked Matsuyama’s 11th career title on the PGA Tour and his third win in the past 10 months, solidifying his position as a formidable competitor against some of the strongest fields in golf.

Despite Morikawa’s consistent performance throughout the week, he had to settle for second place behind Matsuyama. The Plantation course at Kapalua provided ideal conditions for low scores, with minimal wind contributing to another scoring fest at the tournament.

Canadian golfer Corey Conners finished in a three-way tie for fifth place at 24 under, 11 shots behind the winner. Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill tied for 13th at 22 under, while Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford finished in 29th place at 18 under. Nick Taylor of Abbotsford concluded the tournament tied for 48th at 11 under par.

Matsuyama’s record-breaking performance at The Sentry showcased his exceptional skills and solidified his status as a dominant force in professional golf. His victory serves as a testament to his continued success on the PGA Tour and sets a high bar for the upcoming season.
