US Election 2024

High-profile Dem jumps into crowded California governor’s race amid past office controversies

Former Democratic Representative Katie Porter has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the governorship of California. In a video posted on her Instagram account, Porter emphasized the need for hope, grit, fresh ideas, and strong leadership in the state. The 51-year-old politician served three terms in Congress, where she notably unseated GOP Rep. Mimi Walters in 2018.

Porter, originally from Fort Dodge, Iowa, and raised on a farm, made a name for herself in Orange County politics before setting her sights on the governor’s mansion. With current Governor Gavin Newsom term-limited, the race is heating up with speculation about a potential bid from former Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Porter discussed the potential impact of a Harris candidacy on the Democratic field. While Harris has not officially declared her intentions, sources close to her suggest that a decision could come by the end of summer. Porter’s entry into the race brings with it a reputation as a prolific fundraiser and a candidate with a strong connection to California voters.

However, Porter’s campaign is not without controversy. Former staffers have come forward with allegations of inappropriate behavior, including racist comments and mistreatment of employees. Reports surfaced in 2022 that Porter had made multiple staffers cry and allegedly fired a staffer after they both contracted COVID-19. Porter denied these allegations at the time.

Despite these challenges, Porter remains a formidable contender in a crowded field that includes Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco. With the unique “jungle primary” system in California, the race could see two Democrats facing off in the general election.

As Porter’s campaign gains momentum, all eyes are on the future of California politics and the potential for new leadership in the Golden State. The race for governor promises to be a compelling and closely watched contest, with Porter at the center of the action.
