Highway 101 drivers had to be careful of wayward cows

RCMP say they don’t know how many cows could be left in the woods along Highway 101 between Coldbrook and Berwick and motorists should exercise caution when driving in the area after six members of the wayward herd were hit on the highway Monday and Tuesday and killed .

At about 2:30 a.m. Monday, the RCMP was called after three of the animals were hit by a tractor trailer west of exit 15 at Berwick, and another two were hit by a car.

The herd was found to have escaped from a nearby pasture, but Const. Jeff Wilson said it’s not known what led to them going off the field and onto the road.

The owner was located and as many as possible were arrested, but it was not known whether they had all been found.

Then after 9 p.m. Tuesday night east of exit 15 near Waterville, another was hit by a tractor trailer.

Wilson said it’s possible more are loose and people should be alert if they’re driving in the area.

They’ll be hard to see at night,” he said.
