Hockey Canada summit to tackle culture, sexism and homophobia
Hockey Canada’s Beyond The Boards Summit: Promoting Respect and Inclusion in Hockey Culture
Normand Hector, a gay, Black man from Saint John, N.B., is sending a powerful message at Hockey Canada’s second Beyond The Boards summit in Ottawa. He emphasizes the importance of playing the game hard while also respecting differences in a diverse hockey community.
Hector, known for his drag persona “Normani,” has been actively involved in promoting a respectful hockey culture. He has performed at events like the 2022 Memorial Cup and a Pride Night hosted by the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s Saint John Sea Dogs. Additionally, Hockey New Brunswick recruited Hector to educate players, coaches, and families on creating an inclusive environment within the sport.
The summit aims to address unhealthy outcomes in hockey culture, building on the discussions from the first summit in Calgary in 2023. The focus is on tackling issues like toxic masculinity, sexism, gender-based violence, homophobia, and transphobia in hockey.
Hector’s work with young players, from U13 to U18 leagues, has been impactful in fostering understanding and respect. Through engaging presentations, he shares personal experiences and educates on the importance of diversity and inclusion in sports. His approach encourages open dialogue and reflection on discriminatory behaviors.
Reflecting on his interactions with the hockey community, Hector acknowledges the positive changes he has witnessed. He emphasizes the need for players to play hard without resorting to disrespect towards others, regardless of their differences.
The Beyond The Boards summit in Ottawa features prominent figures like NHL executive Brian Burke, Olympic champion Mark Tewksbury, and transgender athlete Harrison Browne as panelists. The discussions aim to drive further progress towards a more inclusive and respectful hockey culture.
As Hockey Canada continues its efforts to address systemic issues within the sport, events like the Beyond The Boards summit serve as crucial platforms for education, dialogue, and positive change. Hector’s advocacy and presence in the hockey community exemplify the ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all participants.
