Homan beats Carey to book playoff spot at Grand Slam of Curling’s Canadian Open
Top-ranked Rachel Homan continues perfect record at Co-op Canadian Open
On Thursday, Rachel Homan emerged victorious against Chelsea Carey with a score of 9-3, maintaining her flawless record at the Co-op Canadian Open. The Ottawa native secured three points in the second end and added three more in the seventh, solidifying her position at 3-0 and securing a playoff spot with one more round-robin game left to play.
Carey, who took over as skip of her Winnipeg-based team from Jennifer Jones, now stands at 2-1. Lindsey Burgess filled in at second for Emily Zacharias, who is on a limited schedule this season.
In other early matches, Kerri Einarson from Gimli, Manitoba, dominated Japan’s Momoha Tabata with a score of 9-1, South Korea’s EunJung Kim defeated Japan’s Sayaka Yoshimura 7-3, and Selena Sturmay from Edmonton triumphed over Sweden’s Isabella Wrana with a score of 10-4.
Later in the day, Brad Jacobs’ Calgary-based rink also maintained a perfect record with a 4-3 victory over Switzerland’s Marco Hösli. Jacobs managed to score two points in the final end with the hammer, overcoming a one-point deficit.
Meanwhile, Scotland’s Bruce Mouat improved to 3-0 with a 7-3 win over Mike McEwen from Saskatoon.
In other results from Draw 10, Matt Dunstone from Winnipeg defeated Rylan Kleiter from Saskatoon 8-3, and Yannick Schwaller from Switzerland edged out John Shuster’s American team 8-7 in an extra end. Christopher Plys led the American team in Shuster’s absence due to illness.
Two more draws were set to take place later in the day at the Silent Ice Centre, with the playoffs scheduled to begin on Saturday and the finals on Sunday.
