Home Alone house: Director explains how the McCallisters afforded it

The Truth Behind the McCallister Family’s Wealth in “Home Alone”

Fans of the classic holiday movie “Home Alone” have long been curious about how the McCallister family could afford their lavish Chicago-area home, and now, director Chris Columbus has shed some light on the backstory.

In a recent interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Columbus revealed that he and the late producer John Hughes had discussed the professions of Kate and Peter McCallister, played by Catherine O’Hara and John Heard, respectively.

According to Columbus, Kate was portrayed as a successful fashion designer, as hinted by the mannequins seen in the family’s basement. However, the director was unsure about Peter’s occupation, suggesting that he may have worked in advertising based on Hughes’ own experiences.

The heartwarming 1990 film follows young Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, as he must fend off burglars after being accidentally left home alone during Christmas.

Despite fan theories, Columbus debunked the idea that the criminals, portrayed by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, targeted the McCallister home due to any involvement in organized crime on Peter’s part.

The stunning Georgian-style property featured in the movie made headlines last year when it was listed for sale at a price of US$5.25 million. With five bedrooms and six bathrooms, the Chicago suburbs residence captured the hearts of viewers with its charm and elegance.

John Hughes, who passed away in 2009, and John Heard, who died in 2017, left behind a legacy with their roles in “Home Alone,” a timeless classic that continues to bring joy to audiences of all ages.
