Homeland Security pushes back on claims ICE denied pregnant detainee medical care

Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), recently spoke out against what she called “dishonest” accusations made by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. The controversy began when ICE arrested an illegal immigrant for a Molotov cocktail attack in Los Angeles, sparking anti-ICE protests across the nation.

In addition to this incident, there have been reports of a pregnant immigrant, Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, who was allegedly denied prenatal care while detained by ICE. According to a report by the Nashville Banner, Monterroso-Lemus, a Guatemalan illegal immigrant, gave birth to a stillborn baby boy after pleading for medical help while in custody.

The article detailed Monterroso-Lemus’s harrowing experience, claiming that she was transferred to multiple facilities before finally ending up at the Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana. The report alleged that Monterroso-Lemus was malnourished, received minimal medical intervention, and was mocked by guards during her time at the facility.

However, Tricia McLaughlin refuted these claims, stating that Monterroso-Lemus had received full medical and prenatal care while in custody. McLaughlin also revealed that Monterroso-Lemus has a history of arrests for child abuse and is wanted on an active warrant for homicide.

Despite this rebuttal, Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal condemned ICE’s treatment of Monterroso-Lemus, calling it “disgusting” and urging others to be outraged. The White House spokeswoman, Abigail Jackson, echoed McLaughlin’s sentiments, accusing Democrats of spreading false narratives about President Trump’s immigration policies.

As the debate over immigration policies continues to rage, it is clear that conflicting reports and accusations are causing tensions to rise. It is essential for both sides to seek the truth and address any injustices that may have occurred, while also ensuring that accurate information is being shared with the public.
