House balance of power still undecided a week after Election Day, with Republicans needing 4 more seats

One week after Election Day, the results of the House of Representatives are still uncertain as votes continue to be counted in 17 House races. While Republican Donald Trump secured the presidency and the GOP took the Senate majority, the fate of the House remains in the balance. House Speaker Mike Johnson is eagerly awaiting the outcome, as is President-elect Trump, who is hoping for full control of the government to push through his agenda before the 2026 midterm elections.

In Alaska, Democratic incumbent Rep. Mary Sattler Peltola is locked in a tight race with Republican entrepreneur Nick Begich in the at-large district. Begich currently holds a 4-point lead with 80% of the vote counted, putting him ahead of Peltola by 10,133 votes.

Moving to Arizona, the 6th Congressional District race sees Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani narrowly leading Democratic challenger Kirsten Engel by a margin of 5,905 votes with 86% of the votes counted.

In California, several key races are still undecided. In the 9th Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Josh Harder is holding onto a lead over Republican Kevin Lincoln by 7,124 votes with 74% of the votes recorded. In the 13th Congressional District, Republican Rep. John Duarte is leading Democrat Adam Gray by just under 3,000 votes with 62% of the vote counted.

In the 21st Congressional District, Democratic Rep. John Costa is ahead of Republican Michael Maher by a slim margin of 1,054 votes with 66% of the vote counted. In the 22nd Congressional District, Republican incumbent Rep. David Valado leads Democrat Rudy Salas by 9,892 votes with 77% of the vote counted.

The race to succeed outgoing Democratic Rep. Katie Porter in the 47th Congressional District is neck and neck, with Republican Scott Baugh holding a slight lead over Democrat Dave Min by 3,097 votes with 82% of the vote counted.

In the 49th Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Rep. Mike Levin is ahead of Republican Matt Gunderson by 14,000 votes with 82% of the votes counted.

In Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, Democrat Rep. Yadira Caraveo trails Republican state Rep. Gabe Evans by less than 1% with 96% of the vote counted. In Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, Republican incumbent Rep. Mariannet Miller-Meeks leads Democrat Christina Bohannan by less than 1% with 99% of the vote counted.

In Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Jared Golden holds a narrow lead over Republican Austin Theriault by less than 800 votes with 98% of the votes counted.

In Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Marcy Kaptur leads Republican Derek Merrin by just over 1,000 votes with 99% of the votes counted.

In Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer trails Democrat Janelle Bynum by 10,062 votes with 87% of the votes counted.

Lastly, in Washington’s 4th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Rep. Dan Newhouse leads fellow Republican Jerrod Sessler by 13,510 votes with 86% of the votes counted.
