House releases Justice Department files in Epstein, Maxwell cases

The House Oversight Committee has made public the files it received from the Justice Department regarding the sex trafficking investigations into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. This move comes after pressure from Congress to disclose more information in the case. However, the files mostly contain information that was already known or available to the public.

These files include hundreds of image files of court filings related to Epstein and Maxwell, as well as video files of police searches and recordings of law enforcement interviews with victims detailing their abuse. The release of these files highlights lawmakers’ eagerness to address this issue as they return to Washington after a break.

House Republican Speaker Mike Johnson is working to prevent a vote on a bill that would require the Justice Department to release all information in the Epstein files, with the exception of victims’ personal information. Despite disagreements on how to proceed, Johnson and a bipartisan group of lawmakers met with survivors of abuse by Epstein and Maxwell on Capitol Hill.

The released files include audio of an Epstein employee describing young girls visiting his home, as well as redacted documents related to Epstein’s Florida prosecution. While some documents date back to 2005, much of the information was already public. Democrats and some Republicans are still pushing for more disclosure, with efforts to force a vote on a bill requiring the public release of files ongoing.

The clash in Congress over the Epstein case continues, with lawmakers demanding justice for survivors and victims. The release of these files has raised questions about why the Justice Department did not release the material directly to the public. Efforts to secure a vote on the bill for more disclosure are ongoing, with the outcome still uncertain.
