Housing minister says $1B critical infrastructure program is open for applications

The federal government has launched a new $1 billion program aimed at helping municipalities and Indigenous communities build critical infrastructure. The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund will provide direct funding for projects related to drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste management.

According to Housing Minister Sean Fraser, the program is now open for applications online. Municipalities and Indigenous communities are encouraged to apply and showcase how their proposed projects will contribute to the development of more homes in their respective regions.

Fraser has stated that he anticipates distributing the full $1 billion from the program to communities by the end of the year. Additionally, he announced that the Regional Homebuilding Innovation Fund is also accepting applications. This fund will allocate $50 million over the course of two years to support housing construction in southern Ontario.

The initiative aims to address critical infrastructure needs across the country and support the growth of communities. By investing in essential services like water and waste management, the government hopes to create a more sustainable and livable environment for residents.

The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund represents a significant step towards improving infrastructure and housing accessibility in various regions. It is a testament to the government’s commitment to fostering growth and development in municipalities and Indigenous communities across the country.
