How John Horgan found success mixing sports and politics

John Horgan, the 36th Premier of British Columbia, was not just a politician, but also a sports enthusiast. His love for sports played a significant role in his political career, and it all started with a rugby match meetup that led to a seismic shift in the political landscape of the province.
It was during the gold medal game of the 2017 HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens at Starlight Stadium in Langford, Horgan’s home constituency, that the first tremors of change were felt. Sitting in the stands wearing his favourite Victoria Shamrocks lacrosse team baseball cap, Horgan struck up a conversation with Andrew Weaver, the leader of the B.C. Greens at the time. This friendly chat eventually led to the Greens supporting the NDP through a confidence and supply agreement, ultimately toppling the long-standing B.C. Liberal government.
Horgan’s passion for sports was evident to all who knew him. Canadian rugby legend Gareth Rees highlighted Horgan’s team-oriented approach to politics, drawing parallels between his sportsmanship and his leadership style. Despite the common belief that politics and sports should not mix, for Horgan, the two went hand in hand and contributed to his success.
Throughout his life, Horgan remained a devoted fan of lacrosse and the Victoria Shamrocks, a passion instilled in him by his father. Whether at home games or on international trips, Horgan proudly sported his custom Shamrocks baseball cap, showcasing his support for the team with pride.
Horgan’s commitment to using sports as a means to unite people was unwavering. He championed events like the 2025 Invictus Games, the men’s 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the hosting of the Grey Cup in Vancouver. His belief in the power of sports to bring communities together was a cornerstone of his legacy.
Sadly, John Horgan passed away at the age of 65 after battling thyroid cancer. His contributions to both politics and sports were remembered fondly by friends and colleagues. A book of condolences has been set up online and at the Parliament Buildings in Victoria for the public to share their messages and memories.
John Horgan’s legacy as a sports-loving politician who believed in the unifying power of athletics will continue to inspire future generations. His impact on both the political and sporting worlds of British Columbia will not be forgotten.
