How this Ukrainian refugee fled war and found hope in a Quebec circus

Daryna Dzyba’s journey to Montreal began three years ago, fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in search of a new beginning as an immigrant in Canada. Her hopes of thriving in a new country were quickly met with challenges she hadn’t anticipated. Despite finding work in a sandwich factory and in retail, the cost of studying in Quebec and balancing work with French-language courses proved to be overwhelming for Dzyba.

As she struggled to make ends meet and felt the weight of uncertainty about her future in Quebec, an unexpected opportunity arose that would change her life. Dzyba found solace and purpose in joining La Troupe d’Ailleurs, a circus troupe made up of newcomers like herself who were seeking a sense of belonging in their new home.

The troupe was formed through a circus program that brought immigrants together to collaborate and put on performances that reflected their immigrant experiences. What started as a temporary program blossomed into a permanent troupe that now performs at festivals and practices in parks and skating rinks, showcasing their multicultural backgrounds and stories.

For Dzyba, La Troupe d’Ailleurs became a safe haven where she forged lifelong friendships and found a sense of community among like-minded individuals who shared similar immigration experiences. The troupe not only provided an outlet for creative expression but also served as a support system that helped Dzyba avoid burnout from her other jobs.

Through circus arts, the troupe members were able to express their cultural identities and integrate into Quebec society, with mentor Lysandre Murphy-Gauthier noting how the circus acted as a bridge for newcomers to improve their French proficiency and build confidence. The solidarity and resilience cultivated within the troupe allowed members like Dzyba to rediscover themselves and find strength in their shared experiences.

Looking ahead, La Troupe d’Ailleurs aims to register as a non-profit organization and continue performing at festivals with the hope of one day having their own practice space. Dzyba dreams of spreading awareness about Ukraine, pursuing further education in theatre, and expanding her performances with the troupe as they grow.

Their next performance is scheduled for a Montreal festival from May 29 to June 1, where they will continue to captivate audiences with their unique blend of circus arts and immigrant narratives.
