‘I didn’t have a bored day in my life’: SNL’s master carpenter retires after 51 years

After an incredible 51-year career, Stephen “Demo” DeMaria, the master carpenter behind the scenes of Saturday Night Live (SNL), is retiring at the age of 87. Since the show’s debut in 1975, DeMaria has been the creative force responsible for building the iconic sets that have brought SNL’s bold comedic visions to life.
Originally from Brooklyn, DeMaria’s passion for carpentry began at a young age. He apprenticed in carpentry at just 14 and worked on various projects across New York City before joining SNL. His journey with the show began in 1974 when he was hired to build the audience seating, leading to a long-standing partnership with SNL creator Lorne Michaels.
Each week, DeMaria would kick off his work on Thursday mornings, receiving design sketches for the set as early as 1 a.m. He would then oversee five teams of carpenters, working tirelessly to bring each set to life by Saturday’s live broadcast. His attention to detail and dedication to his craft have been instrumental in shaping the physical world of SNL.
As he looks back on his career, DeMaria cherishes the memories of working on the show’s early years with comedy legends like John Belushi and Eddie Murphy. He has no shortage of fond memories from his time at SNL, but he holds a special place in his heart for the first 12 years of the show.
With his final assignment completed for the grand 50th season finale, DeMaria is now looking forward to retirement. He plans to spend more time at the Staten Island home he built in the 1950s, surrounded by his two cats and visiting family in New Jersey. Despite the loss of his wife, Patricia, three-and-a-half years ago, DeMaria remains positive and grateful for the life he has built.
As he bids farewell to SNL, DeMaria leaves behind a lasting legacy of hard work, dedication, and a passion for his craft. His impact on the show and the countless sets he has built over the years will be remembered and celebrated for years to come. And as he embarks on this new chapter of his life, DeMaria’s spirit and love for carpentry will continue to inspire those around him. Cheers to a well-deserved retirement for the master carpenter of SNL.
