Mohammad Akib Hossain’s journey as an international student at the University of Regina is a testament to the struggles and triumphs of navigating life in a new country. Arriving in Canada with just two suitcases filled with winter jackets and a heart full of hope, Akib quickly realized the stark difference between the life he left behind and the challenges that lay ahead. Gone were the days of having breakfast served on a silver platter and being chauffeured to school in a fancy car. Instead, he found himself running after buses in blizzards and navigating the aisles of grocery stores to stretch his student budget.

Despite the difficulties he faced, Akib chose to keep his struggles to himself, not wanting to burden his parents who had already sacrificed so much to support his education abroad. He took on a minimum-wage job, worked tirelessly, and immersed himself in volunteer opportunities to make ends meet and forge connections with other students in similar situations.

Through his dedication and perseverance, Akib found a sense of purpose and belonging in his new community. As a student advocate and ambassador leader at the University of Regina, he played a vital role in welcoming and supporting international students from around the world. His efforts not only helped others feel at home but also allowed him to grow into a compassionate and empowered individual.
