Canada

I thought my childhood dreams were out of reach. Then I came to study in Canada

When I first arrived in Canada in the spring of 2023, I was struck by the sight of so many bare trees. Coming from Nigeria where trees stayed lush and green year-round due to the tropical climate, I couldn’t help but wonder why these trees didn’t bear leaves. To me, it signified death and decay.

I questioned my friend who picked me up from the airport about this phenomenon, and he simply smirked and told me to find out for myself. Little did I know that these bare trees were just dormant, waiting to bloom with green leaves in the coming days.

As an international student pursuing a degree in business administration at the University of Regina, my journey in Canada has been nothing short of eye-opening. Growing up in Nigeria, I saw limited opportunities for career growth and success due to a struggling economy and widespread corruption. My parents encouraged me to study abroad in search of a better future, and I embraced the opportunity with determination and optimism.

The transition to life in Canada wasn’t without its challenges. The initial excitement of embarking on a new adventure soon gave way to feelings of isolation and homesickness. The harsh winters, expensive travel costs, and cultural differences made me realize the true weight of being an international student in a foreign land.

However, I refused to let these obstacles deter me from pursuing my dreams. I immersed myself in campus activities, volunteered within the community, and formed bonds with fellow international students who shared similar struggles. Through these experiences, I discovered a newfound sense of purpose and resilience.

One pivotal moment came when I secured a job as a page at the Saskatchewan legislature. Surrounded by inspiring leaders and immigrants who had made a significant impact, I felt a renewed sense of ambition and drive. It was then that I decided to pursue a legal career, a childhood dream that had been buried beneath the realities of life in Nigeria.

With the unwavering support of my parents and newfound community in Canada, I embarked on this new path with determination and hope. Two years have passed since my arrival, and I have no regrets. I have experienced the beauty of all four seasons, forged lifelong friendships, and embraced the promise of the Canadian dream.

Just like those bare trees that eventually sprouted green leaves, I am now putting out my own leaves and blossoming in this new environment. Canada has become my second home, a place where I am free to dream big and chase my aspirations without limitations. And for that, I am truly grateful.
