IAEA chief calls Israeli president following Iran nuclear facility airstrikes

The recent airstrikes on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility have caused significant damage, according to International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. In a call with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Grossi informed him that the facility had been severely affected by the strikes. He also stated that radiation levels outside the facility remained unchanged, and the type of radioactive contamination inside could be managed with appropriate protective measures.
Grossi expressed deep concern over the attack, emphasizing that nuclear facilities should never be targeted as it poses serious risks to both people and the environment. He called for maximum restraint from all parties to avoid further escalation, highlighting the potential grave consequences for the region and beyond. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also called for an emergency meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors to address the situation and condemned Israel’s actions.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the airstrikes targeted the uranium enrichment site in Natanz, which is a key facility for Iran’s nuclear program. The underground area, including a multi-story enrichment hall with centrifuges, was damaged in the strikes. Critical infrastructure necessary for the site’s operation and Iran’s efforts to obtain nuclear weapons were also targeted.
The airstrikes have sparked outrage in Iran, with anti-Israeli protests taking place in Tehran. The situation remains tense, with both Israel and Iran standing firm in their positions. The international community is closely monitoring the developments and urging for restraint to prevent further escalation.
It is essential to continue monitoring the situation closely and to seek diplomatic solutions to prevent further tensions in the region. The safety and security of nuclear facilities must be upheld to avoid potentially catastrophic consequences.
