IAEA warns ‘trust but verify’ in nuclear negotiations with Iran

As negotiations between the U.S. and Iran regarding Tehran’s nuclear program continue, much remains unknown about the progress being made. However, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, emphasized the importance of “trust but verify” when it comes to ensuring that Iran is engaging in sincere negotiations.

The U.S. and Iran are gearing up for a third round of talks, which will address both the technical aspects of Iran’s nuclear program and political negotiations. Grossi commended the mediation efforts of Oman in facilitating these discussions but noted that the IAEA has not yet been asked to assist in the negotiations directly.

While expressing optimism about the ongoing dialogue between the U.S. and Iran, Grossi stressed the need for the IAEA to play a critical role in verifying any agreements reached. He highlighted the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and ensuring that the terms of any deal are credible and verifiable.

Grossi also underscored the complexity of the current situation, given the advancements Iran has made in its nuclear program since the U.S. withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Issues such as uranium stockpiles, centrifuge advancements, and weaponization capabilities are all key areas of focus in the negotiations.

As the talks progress, it is crucial for all parties involved to remain vigilant and prioritize transparency and verification. The IAEA stands ready to support these efforts and ensure that any agreements are based on sound principles and rigorous inspections. By adhering to the principle of “trust but verify,” the international community can work towards a peaceful resolution to the nuclear issue with Iran.
