IIHF to propose 3-on-3 hockey for 2030 Olympics

The International Ice Hockey Federation is making strides to propose the addition of 3-on-3 hockey to the Winter Olympics by 2030 in the French Alps, following in the footsteps of basketball’s expansion in the Summer Games. The governing body of the sport is gearing up to submit its proposal to the International Olympic Committee by January, with the first questionnaire due by March 30 and a decision expected by the end of the following year.

Similar to the success of 3×3 basketball in recent Olympic Games, the IIHF sees the potential for 3-on-3 hockey to thrive on the world’s biggest stage. The introduction of this format could open up opportunities for up to 240 additional players to become Olympians, providing a platform for amateurs and non-NHL professionals to showcase their talents alongside established stars.

With NHL players set to return to the Olympics after their absence in 2018 and 2022, the inclusion of 3-on-3 hockey could add a new and exciting dynamic to the Winter Games. The IIHF has been experimenting with 3-on-3 tournaments for several years, laying the groundwork for a potential Olympic debut that could captivate audiences and elevate the sport to new heights.

As the proposal takes shape and gains momentum, the prospect of witnessing fast-paced and exhilarating 3-on-3 hockey on the Olympic stage is becoming increasingly tangible. With the potential for increased diversity and inclusivity in the sport, the addition of this format could bring a fresh and thrilling element to the Winter Olympics, captivating fans and athletes alike.
