In 1996 Julie Doiron released a breakup song. Decades later, it’s gone viral

Julie Doiron, the singer-songwriter from Moncton, had a momentous experience when she was just 21 years old. At that time, she was the bassist for the iconic indie-alternative band Eric’s Trip in the early 1990s. After finishing a tour with her band, she went through a breakup with one of her bandmates, which inspired her to write the melancholy song “August 10” that later appeared on her 1996 album “Broken Girl.”

Nearly 30 years later, Doiron never imagined that her song would gain millions of streams and become viral. In mid-November last year, her daughter Rose informed her that the song was starting to gain popularity, especially on the video-sharing app TikTok. The song had been used in thousands of videos and had over 41 million streams on Spotify.

Despite the sudden surge in popularity, Doiron decided to let things unfold naturally without involving her management team initially. As the numbers continued to rise, she realized that “August 10” was resonating with a younger audience, primarily aged 18 to 24, who related to the intimate and heartfelt nature of the song.

The success of “August 10” also led to increased streams of her other songs, with her album “Broken Girl” receiving renewed interest. To celebrate the resurgence of her music, Doiron’s team is releasing the albums “Broken Girl” and “Loneliest in the Morning” on vinyl. She has upcoming shows planned to commemorate the vinyl releases and is looking forward to performing songs she hasn’t played in years.

Reflecting on her past self, Doiron acknowledges that the 21-year-old version of herself who wrote these songs needed to express her emotions and experiences to move forward in life. She believes that letting go of those emotions through her music was essential for her growth as an artist.
